CloudNC CAM Assist and the Quote Still on Your Desk

On September 9, 2026, CloudNC raised $20 million to put AI on the quoting desk of a precision machine shop. Nimble Ventures led the round, with Lockheed Martin's venture arm participating, and CloudNC said the money will fund Quote Agent later in 2026. CAM Assist is the programming tool shops already run. CloudNC says more than 1,000 machine shops worldwide, including hundreds in the US, use it so machinists can create effective programs in minutes. Lockheed Martin and Major Tool and Machine are named in CloudNC's September 9, 2026 raise announcement.

CAM Assist is already taking a real job off a scarce person, and the tool is good. The open question is which scarce job you point it at first, the quote or the program, before your patience runs out. If you own the shop and you are also the senior programmer, the person you cannot hire is the same person writing the quote. Quote Agent is not generally available, and you cannot buy it today. That $20 million is a fundraise, not money a shop keeps.

Leave the quote on that person's evening and the buyer can award the work while your spindle is still busy. If you hand over the program and ignore the quote, the RFQ still sits in the same head.

A program that used to sit until Thursday

A print lands, a machine is open, and the program waits because the only person who can write it is on a job you already sold. CloudNC says CAM Assist is how machinists at more than 1,000 shops, hundreds of them in the US, create effective programs in minutes. That part is not a promise for later in the year. It is the product those shops are already using.

The repetitive toolpath work can move off the senior person, and you still keep expert judgment where a wrong call costs real metal. The job is to answer new work faster without buying another CAM seat and without hiring a programmer you cannot find.

The fear is looking slow while a bigger shop already runs this help on the program, then losing the job before any metal is cut. Pulling your only programmer off a paying job for every new print does not fix that. The fix is choosing whether the program is the scarce job this week.

The quote is the same person's evening

Estimating is still a manual expert task. The programmer you cannot hire is also the person who has to turn an RFQ into a cycle time the shop can stand behind. Pull that person off a paying job and the machine waits. Leave the number until evening and the buyer may award the job. Price it wrong and you eat the margin once the spindle starts.

The live quoting aid is the Cycle Time Estimator, not Quote Agent. In a September 11, 2024 release, Norval Scott wrote that CloudNC's estimator turns around estimates for 3-axis and 3+2 axis parts up to 20 times faster, depending on part complexity. That "up to 20 times" is CloudNC's claim. It is not a figure we measured.

Mark Hyde of FJH Group said the tool cut quoting time by about 70 percent. FJH Group is one shop. About 70 percent is their result, not an average you should budget for every print in the country. The release is CloudNC's 2024 estimating announcement.

What you can feel this month is quoting time sitting on one programmer. The result worth chasing is the one FJH Group described for its own shop: the same quote, with about 70 percent less quoting time, and a person still approving the number before it goes to the buyer.

What is still a promise

Quote Agent stays later in 2026. You cannot switch it on this week, so do not plan the quarter as if Quote Agent is already in the building. Cycle Time Estimator is the quoting aid CloudNC has already put in front of shops. The raise pays for CloudNC's next product. It does not show up as savings on your quote, and it does not tell you which job is scarce in your shop.

Both jobs still live in one head. Hand the software the program first and the quote can keep eating the evening. Hand it the quote first and the program can keep sitting until Thursday. In that picture the machines are not the bottleneck. The programmer's hours are.

Other owners hit the same fork. Wix launched Symphony, its group of AI agents, and the useful part was choosing which job to hand over first. A price has the same kind of problem. QuoteIQ puts live CRM records behind ChatGPT estimates, so an estimate still has to meet the customer record you actually have.

Three years to replace one programmer

If your best programmer is one resignation away from a hole, the replacement clock is not this quarter. AJAC's CNC programmer apprenticeship is 3 years and 6,000 on-the-job hours. It drops to 4,000 hours if the person is already a journey-level machinist. Classroom time on the full path is 450 hours.

AJAC cites a Washington State average wage of $40.43 an hour for the occupation, and it says that wage varies by employer and state. AJAC also says it partners with more than 300 advanced manufacturers. This is one state's apprenticeship, not a national training standard. The page is AJAC's CNC programmer program.

Set that next to this week's RFQs. Six thousand hours is the full-path wait for a new programmer. It is not a way to get Thursday's quote out. Use the senior programmer for the judgment, not for every toolpath.

The ad is not a capacity plan

You can run the same machinist or programmer ad and still watch the chair stay empty. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' December 2025 preliminary figures, seasonally adjusted, showed 433,000 manufacturing job openings, a 3.3 percent openings rate, up 34,000 from November. The same month, manufacturing hires were 287,000. Those counts are all manufacturing, not CNC programmers alone. They come from the Job Openings and Labor Turnover Survey released February 5, 2026, and the table is in the BLS December 2025 JOLTS release.

Openings outran hires that month. A hire is a thin plan if it is the only way you clear the queue. You turn work away, or you put it on overtime, because the chair is empty and the machines are not. This quarter, the move is more parts from the people already on the floor.

The longer picture is a 2024 projection, not a vacancy count you can hire against this month. Deloitte and The Manufacturing Institute projected on April 2, 2024 that US manufacturing could need as many as 3.8 million new employees between 2024 and 2033, and that about 1.9 million of those roles could stay unfilled.

That is not a 2026 headcount, and it is not CNC-specific. It is a reason to treat scarce programming time as capacity you can relieve now, instead of a headcount plan that assumes those empty roles get filled.

The first job you hand off

Your first AI hire is the first named job you hand that software. Make it the quote or the program, not both before lunch, and not a tour of every screen. A stop rule is the line it may not cross without you. On this floor, that line is anything that sends a price or a program to a customer.

If the quote is what keeps your programmer at the desk after a paying job should be on the machine, hand the software the cycle-time step first and keep a person on the price. If the program is what sits until that same person is free, hand it the program first, and do not let a price or a program leave until you have signed off.

Here is the short version.

  1. Name the scarce job, the quote or the program.
  2. Point it at this shop's real cycle times and this week's RFQs.
  3. Put a stop rule on anything that sends a price or a program to a customer.

Questions owners actually ask

What is CloudNC's Quote Agent?

Quote Agent is the quoting tool CloudNC said, on September 9, 2026, that it plans to launch later in 2026, and it is not generally available today. The quoting aid already in CloudNC's materials is the Cycle Time Estimator, which CloudNC says turns around estimates for 3-axis and 3+2 axis parts up to 20 times faster, depending on part complexity.

How to choose the quote or the program first?

Name the job that keeps your only programmer off paying work this week, then point the software at that shop's real RFQs and cycle times before you add a second job. Keep a stop rule on anything that sends a price or a program to a customer, so a person still approves what leaves the building.

How much does the empty chair cost while you wait?

AJAC's CNC programmer apprenticeship is 6,000 on-the-job hours over 3 years, or 4,000 hours for a journey-level machinist, and AJAC cites a Washington State average of $40.43 an hour. That wage is one state's average, not a national rate, and it is not a bill for the empty chair.
